Alison Morgan will be competing in the Montane Lakeland 50 on 30th July this year to raise funds for St Joseph’s Family Centre.
About the Lakeland 50
The Montane Lakeland 50 is one of Europe’s greatest ultra-trail runs. It is equivalent to running two marathons over rough terrain. It demands high levels of personal fitness, physical and mental stamina, good navigation skills and the will power to keep on going mile after mile after mile.
The race starts with a loop around Dalemain (about six miles South West of Penrith) and continues via check points at Howtown, Mardale Head, Kentmere, Ambleside, Chapel Stile and Tiberthwaite before finishing in Coniston. The course includes numerous ascents and descents. The cumulative ascent is 9,728 feet and the cumulative descent is 10,069 feet. This comparable to running up and down Snowden three times – twice in daylight and once during the night.
Competitors must carry a backpack containing adverse weather clothing, emergency food supplies, a litre of water, a survival bag, head torch, compass and maps and a fully charged mobile phone. The weight of all this kit is approximately five kilos.
The Lakeland 50 is definitely not a fun run. The event attracts experienced athletes from throughout the UK and further afield. Many runners fail to complete the course.
